The Baryonic Tully-fisher Relation of Galaxies with Extended Rotation Curves and the Stellar Mass of Rotating Galaxies

چکیده
I investigate the Baryonic Tully-Fisher relation for a sample of galaxies with extended 21 cm rotation curves spanning the range 20 . Vf ≤ 300 kms . A variety of scalings of the stellar mass-to-light ratio Υ⋆ are considered. For each prescription for Υ⋆, I give fits of the form Md = AV x f . Presumably, the prescription that comes closest to the correct value will minimize the scatter in the relation. The fit with minimum scatter has A = 50M⊙ km −4 s and x = 4. This relation holds over five decades in mass. Galaxy color, stellar fraction, and Υ⋆ are correlated with each other and with Md, in the sense that more massive galaxies tend to be more evolved. There is a systematic dependence of the degree of maximality of disks on surface brightness. High surface brightness galaxies typically have Υ⋆ ∼ 3 4 of the maximum disk value, while low surface brightness galaxies typically attain ∼ 14 of this amount. Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...
متن کاملA First Attempt to Calibrate the Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation with Gas Dominated Galaxies
We calibrate the Baryonic Tully-Fisher (BTF) Relation using a sample of gas dominated galaxies. These determine the absolute scale of the baryonic mass–rotation speed relation independent of the choice of stellar mass estimator. We find a BTF slope of 3.94±0.07 (random)±0.08 (systematic) and a zero point of 1.79±0.26 (random) ±0.25 (systematic). We apply this relation to estimate the stellar ma...
متن کاملThe Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation.
We explore the Tully-Fisher relation over five decades in stellar mass in galaxies with circular velocities ranging over 30 less, similarVc less, similar300 km s-1. We find a clear break in the optical Tully-Fisher relation: field galaxies with Vc less, similar90 km s-1 fall below the relation defined by brighter galaxies. These faint galaxies, however, are very rich in gas; adding in the gas m...
متن کاملSome Systematic Properties of Rotation Curves
The rotation curves of spiral galaxies obey strong scaling relations. These include the Tully-Fisher and baryonic Tully-Fisher relations, and the mass discrepancy—acceleration relation. These relations can be used to place constraints on the mass-to-light ratios of stars. Once the stellar mass is constrained, the distribution of dark matter follows. The shape of the dark matter distribution is ...
